Paraguay has once again been granted access to export beef to Europe as of June, leading Jan Zandbergen World-Wide Quality in Meat to add Paraguayan grass-fed beef to its product range. The first containers have now arrived and are available for sale in the EU market.

Grass-fed beef from Paraguay is of a higher quality than meat from neighbouring Brazil. Meat from Brazil is primarily sourced from zebu cattle, while stocks in Paraguay consist of a varied mix of Hereford, Angus and zebu, resulting in a higher-quality product with a more exceptional flavour.

In the past, the Paraguayan beef industry suffered a series of setbacks, including an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease that led to the country being banned from exporting its beef to various markets. Given the fact that the country is landlocked (and the political repercussions that this entails), overseas transport also constituted a major challenge. Despite these obstacles, however, the Paraguayan beef sector has made good progress and refined its expertise and professionalism in the process. As such, Paraguay has recently been granted access to various markets once again and has since overtaken Argentina on the list of leading beef exporters. EU borders have been open to Paraguayan beef exports since June 2015. With these developments in mind, it is certainly worth keeping an eye on the beef sector in Paraguay.
